They told me I couldn't, I told them I could.
They told me I won't, I told them I would.
They told me I shouldn't, I told them I shall.
And I did.

Hi, my name is Anita Schwartz, and I am a learning
disabled MSW student at Fordham University, Tarrytown, NY.
From raising "highly intelligent" children, to working at
major companies, to continuing my education, I have found
that my learning disability affects more then just my
reading ability. It challenges several aspects of my life,
and at times, I must suffer in silence, alone. Therefore,
I wrote "You see me, who am I?" in order to help the
non-learning disabled visualize an invisible disorder.

committed citizens can change the world." - Margaret Mead

You see me, who am I?
By: Anita Schwartz 2/5/04
You see me walking down the street
You see me sitting on a park bench
You see me waiting at the bus stop
You see me in line at the supermarket
You see me chatting with fellow students
in our university's caf'e
You see me behind a Fortune 500
corporation's desk
You see me playing in front of my house
with my children on the weekend
You see me driving a cab
You see me when you call 911 and
I have EMT written on my jacket
You see me in the guidance office because
your child has a problem at school
You see me at the bank when you want to
apply for a loan
Yet -
there are things you don't know about me,
but you trust me.
I am lucky to spell my name write.
I get lost in office buildings
I get confused where things are,
even in my own kitchen
I memorized the preamble to The Constitution
Of the United States in fourth grade, but
I can't spell any of those words and mispronounce
some, yet my heart sinks every time I speak them.
I get "A's" on my exams and term papers, but
need more time to complete them.
I don't remember how to get to XYZ company
in the town of ABC, but I can look up driving
directions on the world wide web.
I am driving you to XYZ, you tell me to make a
right turn, but I make a left turn. We are now lost.
But I say "all roads lead to China",
and we arrive at XYZ on time.
The letters I write to you always seem to be unorganized,
but they are always heart-filled and funny as hell.
I don't remember the rules to play pool,
so I make up my own rules and play anyway.
It takes me three times as long to read "Dear Abby"
as you, but I still enjoy it as much as you do.
I go to parties and get everyone's name confused.
Even though I can't remember your name,
I can still have fun with you at the party.
I have difficulty communicating my thoughts
and feelings, but that does not mean I think
or feel less then you do.
Sometimes living life is too fast for me, making
me very tired, but I view life as one big learning
experience and I love every waking moment of it.
Who am I?

For me, my learning disability means
learning differently.
